Halloween Showing!

Hi everyone! I trust you all remember that tonight, October 31, is our annual Halloween showing! We'll be in ED-1014 and there will be two shows premiered as well as some time to eat, drink and be merry. The festivities start at 7:30 with Death Note episodes 1 and 2, and then there will be a long-ish break where we'll bring out the treats and Castlevania music and stuff, as well as having the costume contest and cosplay photos, and some time later we'll proceed with Black Blood Brothers eps 1 and 2. Hope to see you there!!

Death Note

Light Yagami is an ace student with great aspects who's bored out of his mind. One day he finds the Death Note, a notebook owned by a shinigami (Death God). with the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create a perfect world - a world without crime or criminals. However, when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer.

Black Blood Brothers

Ten years after the Holy War in Hong Kong, Mochitsuki Jurou, aka the Silver Blade, and the lone hero who fought and defeated the Kowloon Children despite the loss of his lover, returns to Japan with his young brother, Mochitsuki Kotaro. The two quickly discover that the Kowloon Children who survived the Holy War are seeking to infiltrate the “Special Zone”—a thriving city protected by an invisible barrier that will not allow Kowloon Children entrance—unless they’re invited. Red Bloods refer to the humans; Black Bloods are the vampires, and the Mochitsuki Brothers are Old Blood—the last descendants of an elite clan of vampires. When Kotaro is abducted by one of the Kowloon Children, Jurou has no choice but to fight once more.

Midterm Fest!!!

Hey all!! So, as you've hopefully noticed, this weekend is Midterm Break!

And as you all hopefully know, that means it's Midterm Fest time again!

And in case you don't, here's the idea. Over midterm break, because we all like anime sooo much, we show an ENITRE SERIES in just three nights! That's right, 26 episodes, three nights, bunches of fun!

This semester we're showing Noir, with episodes 1-9 on Friday night, 10-18 on Saturday, and 19-26 on Sunday. We start at 7:30, as usual, and go until we're done! Hope to see you all there!!

Noir
Mireille Bouquet is a professional assassin, and a very good one at that. But when she follows up an e-mail from a young Japanese girl named Yuumura Kirika, inviting her to take "a pilgrimage to the past", her life becomes even more dangerous than it already is. Now, with a haunting melody invoking the memory of an event long past, Mireille and Kirika decide to work together to find the truth about a thousand year old organization that has controlled both of their lives since before they were born. And the only clue in their search, the only thing Kirika remembers about herself, becomes their working codename: a name designating an ancient fate, of two maidens who reign over death--Noir.

Sept 22 Showing

Mae doesn't appear to have sent out the email yet, but there is a showing on Friday, Sept 22 in ED-1014 (that's the G.A. Hickman/Education building) beginning at 7:30. We'll be watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and then Howl's Moving Castle. Otanoshimini!

First Showing of the Semester!

Hi everyone! We'll actually be kicking off the semester on-time this year with a showing at 7:30 p.m. on September 8th. This will take place in Education-1014 (the G.A. Hickman building, a.k.a. "The Star Wars Room") which we hope will be the society's new semi-permanent home thanks to the high demand for and various regulations in the Engineering building combined with the number of things that went wrong last semester. XD We hope you can learn to like ED-1014 just as much, and we won't even have to yell to be heard in there!

You'll hear about this at the showing, but we'll be bringing back the Media Library at this point as well as an updated version of the Tape Library, and you can borrow two items from each if you so wish. Remember that you need a membership to borrow, so if you're interested, bring along $5 and we'll set you up with a shiny membership card and access to our anime titles. The end-of-semester trivia contest will only be available to members, so why not support the society now and help yourself to the benefits? :)

In any case, this week's plan is episodes 1-4 of Naruto, and for our feature, Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro. Lupin has always been a society favorite and I'd say many people agree that Cagliostro is one of his best. (Summaries of both are below!)

Since this is orientation time, the Anime Society will have a booth at both the Orientation and Fall Fairs, on Tuesday and Thursday, and in the P.E. gym and the UC third floor, respectively. Drop by to see our snazzy booth, sign the ratification form, check out our little poster showbcase and catch whatever we happen to be showing on the DVD player!

Hope to see everyone at some point this week!

Showing Summaries:

Naruto

Naruto closely follows the life of a boy who is feared and detested by the villagers of the hidden leaf village of Konoha. As Naruto grows he decides to become the strongest ninja in Konoha in an effort to show everyone that he is not as they perceive him to be, but is a human being worthy of love and admiration. But the road to becoming Hokage, the title for the strongest ninja in Konoha, is a long and arduous one. It is a path filled with betrayal, pain, and loss; but with hard work, Naruto may achieve Hokage.

Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro

After a successful robbery leaves famed thief Lupin III and his partner Jigen with nothing but a large amount of fake money, the so called "Goat Bills", he decides to track down the counterfeiter responsible - and steal any other treasures he may find in the Castle of Cagliostro, including the 'damsel in distress' he finds imprisoned there. However, as usual, Inspector Zenigata is hot on his trail.

Last Showing for the Semester

Finally we have confirmation on our room booking! (Please God let the room be operational this time...) The final showing for the Spring semester will be this Friday, July 27 (aka tomorrow). We'll be showing Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon episodes 1-4 and Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle (the second movie). Yes, both showings are Japanese language with subtitles. Sailor Moon will include one episode that were banned from the DiC English version, so if you watched this series as a kid, there'll even be new material, not to mention all the stuff that was cut from the dub. ;)

(summaries are slightly edited from the email versions, due to my English major reflex)

Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon

Usagi's seemingly ordinary and klutzy life is changed forever when a talking black cat appears and tells her she must save the world from evil forces out for revenge against a missing princess. To do this, she'e given the power to become Sailor Moon and fight for Love and Justice, and in the name of the moon, she will punish evil!

Dragonball Movie 2: Sleeping Princess in the Devil's Castle

Twelve year old Son Goku seeks out Muten Rôshi to ask to be accepted as a martial arts student, while the little monk, Kuririn arrives for the same reason. Muten Rôshi sends them on a quest far to the east, where "five mountains stand, called the 'Devil's Hand'." In a castle there, there lies the legendary and beautiful, "Sleeping Princess." Whoever brings back the Sleeping Princess will become the Turtle Master's new student!

Room Change!

Hey everyone! EN-2006 is under construction!

WE're in SN-2105. Hope to see you there! (Around the corner from 2109.)

July 14th Showing

Sorry about the delay in updating!

We'll be watching Popoloiscrois Monogatari and Makai Senki Disgaea, two video game based anime. So far, we're still booked in EN-2006 as we weren't given a new room (what happened to the renovations?), but if we have to move we'll let you know.

Popolocrois Monogatari:

Long long ago, in the time of the courageous, the knights and magic, there was a country by the name of Popolocrois in which the people live peacefully. King Paul is a kind-hearted man who entered into a marriage with one of the daughters of the Ryu clan, Sania, in order to overcome the barriers between the different races. The Queen soon gave birth to a child, Prince Pietro, who will play a significant role in bridging the gap between the humans and the Ryu clan.

Makai Senki Disgaea (depending on availability):

Based on the hit video game by Nippon Ichi. After a two year slumber, Laharl, the prince of the Netherworld, finds the Netherworld in chaos after the death of his father, King Krichevskoy. Not wasting any time, Laharl, with the help of his father's former vassal Etna, sets out to conquer the Netherworld and proclaim himself Overlord.

See you then!

Room change

The projector in SN-2109 is still broken, so we've moved to EN-2006. Sorry about that!!

Friday's Showing

Well, after some deliberation, we decided to go with the showing we announced on the first day of the fest: a Tsubasa/xxxHolic double feature. We did show Holic recently...but since we showed Tsubasa's first season in its entirety during the Winter semester, this is the optimal time to see that movie, and it crosses over briefly with Holic, which is neat. It's also midsummer. So...oh well!

See you at 7:30 this Friday in SN-2109. And sorry about the website downtime!

Thursday, June 22, 2006

Next Showing

Due to the difficulties we had finishing up before 12 last night, tonight and tomorrow we will be starting at 7 p.m. Please keep in mind that tonight, Tuesday, will be EN-2006 while tomorrow, Wednesday, is in SN-2109.

Monday, June 19, 2006

As you are all hopefully aware, our Midterm Fest will continue tonight (Monday) through to Wednesday night. Tonight and Tuesday are in EN-2006, Wednesday is in the Science building, room 2109. As usual, everything starts at 7:30.

See you then!

Sunday, June 18, 2006

No Showing Tonight

Seems like it's just impossible to get a room booked for tonight, so we're just going to extend the Midterm Fest through Wednesday as well. Sorry for the inconvenience, and we'll see you tomorrow, Monday, in EN-2006 for the next nine Full Moon episodes.

Tonight's Room

Hey all! Just to remind you, we couldn't get EN-2006, like usual for tonight. So instead, we're in ED-1020. Please don't go to the wrong room, we won't be there!

~Spring Festival~

Well, our last showing for the semester is coming up this Friday, and we're celebrating the ending of winter with our 2nd-annual Spring Festival~!

First and foremost, we'll in our regular spot at the regular time - EN-2006 @ 7:30pm

Like last year, we'll have a few special things going on, on top of our regular showing~

COSPLAY
Got an anime costume sitting around or itching to be made? Put it on and show it off! Cosplay is always welcome, but especially for Spring Festival!

KARAOKE
We love karaoke and we know you guys do too, so we're giving you the chance to sing your heart out to your favourite anime and j-pop/rock tunes! You can check out my playlist and see if I've got anything you like, bring in your own music on CD, iPod, or Flash Drive, or e-mail me your song (10MiB or under) and I'll bring it in for you.

TRIVIA
Ah, yes, ye old faithful trivia... so, how much were YOU paying attention this semester? We'll test your know-how and find out! As usual, there's a chance to win one of ten sexy trivia posters!

AND MORE!
Hey, this is for you guys! If you want to add to the party, feel free! Food and drinks are always welcome! (No alcohol permitted)

OH, AND THE ANIME
Let's not forget we have two anime series to show you guys! You might have caught the (horrible) dubs on TV, but now you'll get the chance to see them the way they were meant to be!

Hoshi no Kirby [Kirby of the Stars] (Episodes 1–3)
Tens of thousands of years ago, a being known as Nightmare appeared and created a great army of demon beasts, waging war and conquering much of the universe. However, an army of Star Warriors fought and defeated him... or so they thought. Now, as evil begins to reawaken, the planet Popstar appears to be the Nightmare’s new target. But, a legend among its people has foretold that a great warrior named Kirby would be their saviour.
A mysterious, diminutive, pink, baby creature carrying that legendary name crash-lands in the peaceful country of Pupupuland… Now it’s up to the Kirby to fight the demons sent after him, while still trying to learn his own abilities.

Digimon Adventure 02 (Episodes 1–3)
Three years have passed since the events of Digimon Adventure. The Digital World was supposedly secure and peaceful; however, a new evil has appeared in the form of the Digimon Kaiser. However, this new villain is different—he’s human, and he’s enslaving Digimon. To further complicate things, he’s somehow made it impossible for Digimon to evolve and fight him.
A new generation of Chosen Children are called upon to fight him, along with a now-older Takeru and Hikari. The only way to stop him, it seems, lies within an ancient power.

This will be my (Zippo) last night with the society as an executive, so I hope we can make this a good one, guys! It's been a blast, but I'm going to focus on my studies and future career. Thanks for everything, and I hope to see you all on Friday!

Not willing to let the girl die, they complete the mission by delivering her to the legendary mercenary ship Sylvana, only to become part of the crew as fighter pilots.

Line up for NEXT Friday

I don't know if any of you guys might have been, but we ourselves at the Society got a little confused with our own schedule and thought there was a showing this weekend. XD
For those of you who have calendars (or paid close attention to the sidebar, which was correct), you'll note that our next showing is indeed next week, on the 10th of March.
This is partly due to the fact that our mid-term fest was originally planned out as a four-day event, thusly running into a 2nd week — and also to place the last showing on the last day of lectures.

I apologize for any confusion. Basically don't show up this Friday — we'll see you next Friday.

That said, we do have our line-up for the 10th planned out! And it follows as such:

陰陽大戦記—Onmyou Taisenki
[The Chronicle of the Big Battle between Yin and Yang]陰陽大戦記—Onmyou Taisenki
(Episodes 1–4)

All his life, Riku Tachibana has been raised by his grandfather. For some reason, the old man has always been fond of strange hand gestures, and they've rubbed off on Riku, who performs them almost subconsciously, to his classmates' great amusement. One day, however, it suddenly becomes clear to Riku what his grandfather has been surreptitiously teaching him. And the teachings could mean the difference between life and death for Riku.

らんま1/2—Ranma ½Ranma ½
(Episodes 1–4)

A classic favourite of almost all anime fans; I think it's high time we actually show a bit of the series!

Saotome Ranma, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the 'cursed training ground' of Jusenkyo in China. There, despite the warnings of the Chinese guard, they fall into the cursed springs. From now on, whenever Ranma is doused in cold water, he turns in to a girl, and a cute, well-built red-head at that. Hot water changes him back into a man again, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father engages him to Tendo Akane, a girl who hates boys.

I hope to see you all on March 10th!

Crisis Averted

Scratch that earlier problem - thanks to the wonderful Jen Webster, we now have all of Tsubasa and will be showing nine episodes tonight as scheduled \o/

Slight problem

Due to a problem in obtaining the required media, we will only be able to show the first eight episodes of Tsubasa, as opposed to the nine originally scheduled; this will push episode 9 to tomorrow. Will we decide tonight or tomorrow whether will we show 10 episodes tomorrow or push episode 18 to Sunday.
If we have further issues, we may have to spread out the fest and continue into Monday; but hopefully everything will go smoothly from here on.
We'll keep you posted.

If any one of our members has their own copy of the series (on CD/DVD), however, please feel free to bring it in - it would mean a lot to us!

Tsubasa Chronicle Fest details!

As many of you are probably aware, we're going to be showing Tsubasa Chronicle for our fest this semester!

Syaoran, a boy who wants to become an archeologist, and Sakura, a princess from the Clow Kingdom, are childhood friends with a close relationship. On a fateful night, Sakura lost all her memories as a result of a conspiracy to obtain her powers. In order to regain her memory, Syaoran seeks help from the witch, Yuuko. Yuuko tells Syaoran that he has to travel from one alternate reality to another to collect fragments of Sakura's memory. However, even if Sakura regains her memory, she will have no recollection of Syaoran. Traveling together with them is Kurogane, a warrior who was exiled from his country, and Fye, a magician who wants to escape from his King. With the help of a magical creature, Mokona, they set off on an exciting journey through time and space.

For those of you unfamiliar to the series, it is an alternate universe setting and cross-over of many of CLAMP's various works. It's definitely a good watch ^_^

We've opted to run the fest for three days; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (the 17th—19th) and will be showing nine episodes on the first and second nights, and eight on the last night.
The only foreseen problem is that EN-2006 turned out to be unavailable for the 19th, so we will be having our last night in SN-2109 - But we will still be in EN-2006 for the first two nights.

It's looking to be a good fest! Hope to see you there!

Winter Weather Policy

In light of today's blizzard conditions, and the first snow day of the year, I think it might be a good idea to fill you guys in on our winter weather policy.

In the event that MUN is closed on the day of a showing, our showing for that night will be cancelled. However, if MUN were to be closed in the morning, and then reopened in the afternoon, the showing will more-than-likely go ahead as planned.
However, regardless of MUN's decision, if we feel that the weather has deteriorated to an unsafe level (or is forecasted to rapidly deteriorate throughout the evening), we will cancel the showing.

If an Anime Society showing is to be cancelled, notification will be added to the website by the afternoon. Also, those on the mailing list will receive the same notification in their e-mails. Our best advice is to always check the website before you head out.

That said, Friday is looking to be a good day and there shouldn't be any reason to cancel this coming showing... So we hope you'll have dug yourselves out by then and will be able to join us!

(As a side-note, I apologize for the lack of posters this week. Between work, studying for two tests, and this weather, it wasn't possible for me to design, let alone print and distrobute one. Sorry!)

Fullmetal Alchemist and Slayers coming your way!

Alright everybody, last week was a phenomenal success and this week we hope it'll be the same!
(As per usual, we'll be in EN-2006 at 7:30pm)

Last year, for our midterm fest, we showed the series Fullmetal Alchemist in its entirety. It was around that time that a movie for the series was announced - and it was in Japanese theatres that summer. Now, finally, it's out and we can show it to you guys! But if you didn't catch the series, or are a little rusty, fear not! A one-hour special aired on Japanese television called Reflections. We like to call it FMA-in-an-hour. As you might guess, it's a recap of the entire series in the span of an hour. It's a perfect way to refresh your memory before...

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala
Munich, Germany, 1923. Two years have passed since Edward Elric was dragged from his own world to ours, leaving behind his country, his friends and his younger brother, Alphonse. Stripped of his alchemical powers, he has been all this time researching rocketry together with Alphonse Heiderich, a young man who resembles his own brother, hoping to one day find a way back home. His efforts so far had proven fruitless, but after lending a hand to a troubled gipsy girl, Edward is thrown in a series of events that can wreak havoc in both worlds. Meanwhile, at his own world, Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search for a way to reunite with his older brother.

But of course, there's still time left in the night! So, after we get all that FMA out of our systems, it'll be time to watch:

Slayers Return
Outrageous enemies such as secret organizations aiming to dominate the world and mysterious strongest fighting forces attack Lina and Naga one after another for legendary "treasure" lying in a village in which Elves used to live. In addition, an immortal monster not affected by attacking magic appears and drive Lina and Naga into a terrible pinch. What they should do?

Also, for those of you who have memberships, the tapelist is available on the sidebar. If you want to rent a tape, just e-mail mae@mun-anime.com.

Rooms Confirmed! (and more!)

Alright, peoples, our room is now confirmed; we will indeed be in EN-2006. As such, the poster is now online for your viewing pleasure!

Also, our good friend and former president, Ron Keating has been working on an Anime-related tabletop RPG for many years now, and has recently decided to create a public forum where anyone can come and contribute to or discuss the game. It's free, and the game is free, and not the sole property of any particular person. If you want to check it out, head on over to...

First Showing of the Semester!

Hey guys, the first showing of the semester is coming your way this Friday, the 20th!
Even though I sent an e-mail nearly two weeks ago, I have yet to hear back from the people in charge of booking us our room. However, I'm going to call them tomorrow and try and confirm something. Regardless, we should be in EN-2006, as expected. Check back in a day or two in case this changes.

Anyhoo, we've got quite a show coming your way this weekend, including something I know a lot of you have been asking us to show. That's right...

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the Planet has begun healing itself from the devastating attack from Meteor, but a strange disease known as "Geostigma" has arisen. Meanwhile three unknown figures appear and begin searching for Jenova's remains to complete the Reunion. The fate of Cloud Strife and the rest of the world are to be revealed!

Also, as an encore to the movie, we'll be showing Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, which is an anime rendition of two flashbacks that took place in the game.

But we're not just leaving it there. We're bringing you a hilarious series preview of...

Pani Poni Dash!
Rebecca Miyamoto was born to an American father and a Japanese mother. Rebecca enrolled at M.I.T. at the age of nine and graduated at ten with a triple major. So, what's an eleven-year-old genius to do? Become a teacher, of course. Parodying everything from Kill Bill, to Super Mario Bros, to Internet emoticons, this series is jam-packed with endless hilarity.

We'll be showing between 3–4 episodes of Pani Poni Dash, depending on how much time we have left to the night. It's looking to be quite the showing, so don't miss it!

Old website finally fixed...

I'm sure many of you remember the old, terribly outdated webpage for this society. It was a big problem for us, as it was the link Google/Yahoo/etc associated with us, as well as a handful of other sites. Well, I finally managed to meet with someone from the Computer Science department and gain access to the files... so after nearly five years, the old thing has finally been pulled down and replaced with a redirection to the new site. Now, if you go to the old link, it automatically brings you here.

Don't worry, I didn't just delete the whole thing; I backed it up. I'll soon put up a link to the archive, for nostalgic purposes.

Welcome to Winter 2006!

Happy New Year!
Hey all, welcome to a brand new year, and a brand new semester with the Anime Society! MUN starts back up on the 9th, and I've already submitted room requests for the whole semester. I've requested that we be in our usual spot (EN-2006) and at the usual time. We're likely to get it, but I can't say for sure, so be sure to check back in a week or so for updates.
As it stands now, our first showing will be on the 20th; this way all the dates fall perfectly with mid-term break and the last day of lectures.

Also, I've made a slick calendar for the MUN semester, with all the showings for the semester highlighted~ Feel free to print yourself out a copy - it's perfect for putting in you binder, or posting on your wall for a quick calendar reference. Of course, be sure to check back in a week or so to see if I've had to make any changes.

Stay tuned, we'll be announcing what we're showing for our first night soon!
