First Showing of the Semester!

Hey guys, the first showing of the semester is coming your way this Friday, the 20th!
Even though I sent an e-mail nearly two weeks ago, I have yet to hear back from the people in charge of booking us our room. However, I'm going to call them tomorrow and try and confirm something. Regardless, we should be in EN-2006, as expected. Check back in a day or two in case this changes.

Anyhoo, we've got quite a show coming your way this weekend, including something I know a lot of you have been asking us to show. That's right...

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, the Planet has begun healing itself from the devastating attack from Meteor, but a strange disease known as "Geostigma" has arisen. Meanwhile three unknown figures appear and begin searching for Jenova's remains to complete the Reunion. The fate of Cloud Strife and the rest of the world are to be revealed!

Also, as an encore to the movie, we'll be showing Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, which is an anime rendition of two flashbacks that took place in the game.

But we're not just leaving it there. We're bringing you a hilarious series preview of...

Pani Poni Dash!
Rebecca Miyamoto was born to an American father and a Japanese mother. Rebecca enrolled at M.I.T. at the age of nine and graduated at ten with a triple major. So, what's an eleven-year-old genius to do? Become a teacher, of course. Parodying everything from Kill Bill, to Super Mario Bros, to Internet emoticons, this series is jam-packed with endless hilarity.

We'll be showing between 3–4 episodes of Pani Poni Dash, depending on how much time we have left to the night. It's looking to be quite the showing, so don't miss it!

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, I'm just curious if anyone else has an opinion on this (and I'm jealous I can't go because I have to work ^_~):

Is Advent Children anime?

"Anime" is Japanese animation. Advent Children is computer animation, so it technically falls under the definition of "anime".

But how is the term "anime" used in Japan (I'm honestly not completely certain)? Is it the equivalent of our term "cartoon" (excepting the kiddie-stereotype)? In that case, does Advent Children not fall under the "anime" category as it doesn't follow traditional two-dimensional/line based design? Or is the term used literally, meaning that CG is encompassed by it?

I've always assumed it was more of the "cartoon" definition, and thus like Shrek wouldn't be considered a cartoon, AC wouldn't be considered an anime. Then again, I'm making an assumption here. And there's nothing to say that the definition can't have evolved.

Anyone else have an opinion?

While not the traditional anime style, it is animated, and it is from Japan. We also showed Appleseed a little while ago, which was also CG'd... and let's not forget the video game tourny, which wasn't anime related. Nothing wrong with expanding a little ^_^
If you haven't already seen the movie, I'll try and let you borrow a copy :3

I don't know too much about the Appleseed thing, so I can't comment on that, and like I said there's no right or wrong answer.

The Tourny is unrelated, though, 'cause it wasn't a showing, just a fundraiser. Many societies do unrelated things to raise money.

I agree that expanding the repetoire isn't a bad thing. And like we both pointed out, it fits the literal definition. This was an exercise in perception for me, I guess.

And the "comments" feature looked loney. ^_~

I've seen the movie, but not Last Order yet, which would have been fun. I think I can get them off Jen, though. Thanks for the offer! I appreciate it. :)
